The building was built by a famous architect about 100 meters from the royal palace precinct and was already about 100 years old in 1860. The Queen of Denmark established the Royal Maternity House in 1785 to to reduce the death rate for women and babies. This new establishment provided more extensive facilities that that provided by the hospital next door which had provided some maternity services for over 35 years. Unwed mothers were permitted to give birth in anonymity and unwanted babies were supported.
