Donald enlisted as a flight officer with recommendation from the Air Board stating he had been "recently appointed to a commission as a Lieutenant in 3rd Divisional Engineers, A.M.F., (1.1.1927)". He gained some flying experience, some privately, gunnery practice but seems to have spent more time utilizing his technical knowledge of engines and lubricants to the benefit of the air force. When WW11 broke out he enlisted in the RAAF where his technical, administrative and training skills saw him valued to the extent of being recommended for an OBE, see media for citation. At the end of the war he remained with the RAAF as a reservist until 1956.
