| Fact | Photo of a Miss Zahel from an exhibition at the State Library of NSW 2003-2004 of portraits from the Freeman Studio of Sydney. http://archival-classic.sl.nsw.gov.au/album/ItemViewer.aspx?itemid=824062&suppress=N&imgindex=28 is a link to the portrait. There is no proof that the photo is of Thirza Zahel. However, indications are that she spent a lot of time in Sydney with her father's sister and family. She travelled overseas to study singing with the same teacher as Dame Nellie Melba and thus had an affinity with the stage. My limited researches have shown the all Zahels in Australia arose from Thirza's grandfather and his two wives. Two daughters from the 2nd wife entered the convent and are unlikely to be strong candidates for dressing up and having photos taken. |
