Framework knitting was physically demanding work mostly performed at home by the man of the house but supported by wife and children involved in preparation of thread and sewing the seam at the back of stockings. Frames were expensive so most were rented with the knitter required to supply everything to enable production with the resultant stockings sold back to the frame owner. See https://youtu.be/WdVDoLqg2_c for a video of a knitting frame in action. Richard was unmarried and it is unknown how his personal and working life was organised.
