Prestonpans kirk session, Accounts (1788-1847), CH2/307/20 Prestongrange Church C. 2015 Prestongrange Church The church was built in 1596 on the ruins of a 13th century abbey. The present building dates back to 1774 but the clock tower still remains from the original 16th century church. The congregations of Preston and Grange churches became united in 1981 to form Prestongrange Parish Church which is a Category A Listed Building. In 1745, the Battle of Prestonpans, a notable Jacobite victory, was documented by a priest watching from the church tower. Some soldiers from the battle are buried in the kirkyard but, in August 2014, vandals destroyed 10 old headstones and pushed others over. The only remaining recognisable battle stone is a panel in the kirkyard wall in memory of John Stuart. https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/3419501 |

One of the witnesses… William was a farmer from Lower Plenty and Jessie was a spinster from Richmond. One of the witnesses was Jessie's brother, James Miller Arnot. The signature of the other witness is less clear. It is that of Margaret, maybe Arnot. Married by a Baptist minster according to the rites of the Baptist Church. William had also signed that he was a member of the Presbyterian Church. The record identifies the location as that of "the house of W Arnot - Richmond". I have never found such a person, apart from a bookseller in St Kilda. However, Jessie's brother, James Miller Arnot did reside in Richmond and he was a witness so I wonder if a mistake was made. |
