The marriage was a traditional form whereby each party accepted the other as spouse in the presence of witnesses. Arthur was too unwell on the day of marriage to sign legal documents. The following year in Melbourne Clara signed a statement that she considered the marriage to be of doubtful validity. However, according to Wiki their form of marriage, with consumation, was not outlawed until the Marriage (Scotland) act 1939.
