G D Squibb's 1989 edition of Dugdale's 1662-4 Visitation of Derbyshire recorded Valentine as 36 years in 1663 with a 4 year old son named John in addition to his wife, Ann Turner, and 3 named daughters. Valentine signed the pedigree which named his father's wife, Joyce Hawford. His grandparents, Henry Merry and Margaret Palmer, and 3 of their sons, including the name of the heir's wife, were noted. Squibb added that the grandfather, Henry Merry, was the son of John Merry of London from the 1611 Visitation.

According to Wikipedia "Heraldic visitations were tours of inspection undertaken by Kings of Arms (and more often by junior officers of arms (or Heralds) as deputies) throughout England, Wales and Ireland. Their purpose was to register and regulate the coats of arms of nobility, gentry and boroughs, and to record pedigrees."
