The earlier value of knighthood as a recognition of valor and breeding had morphed into a transactional arrangement whereby the Crown gained money for an award which became debased in value to its awardees and others due to its dissociation from significant criteria besides land ownership. It has been suggested that refusal of the award and its concomitant cost would create more trouble than it was worth which may have been especially true for recusants such as Henry Merry already suffering financially for adherence to the old religion; Catholicism, and refusing to attend Church of England services.
